Build your own fence for your patio and terrace

A latticework fence is a functional and attractive option for your outdoor spaces. It is ideal if you want privacy in your patio, garden, or terrace.

Beyond being a decorative element, its installation is practical and easy to do. With this type of fence, your home's outdoor environment will be more stylized and stand out from the rest of the houses.

A very important feature is that the latticework fence is highly resistant in different weather conditions. It also provides intimacy, allows you to delimit certain areas, and creates new spaces, especially in large patios.

Enhance any type of decor thanks to the versatility of wood. You can place plants on it or simply let it shine on its own. For this tutorial, the size of the fence in the designed environment is 60 cm high by 2.44 m long.

Decorate and secure your outdoor spaces.

Teak latticework

1" x 2" planed pine strips

2" x 2" pine strip

Circular saw

Varnish in the shade of your preference

Brush

1/2" 500 W hammer drill with reverse

Fine-tipped wood screws

Instructions:

1. To build the fence, you must first place the latticework, which has an original height of 1 m, in a horizontal position regardless of measurements or cuts. If necessary, cut to the desired height for your fence.

2. Using the final dimensions of the latticework, measure the length and height, cut the 1"x2" strips, and place them as a full frame to provide finish and support.

3. Measure and cut the two posts. If you are going to place your fence in a soil garden, you must add 50 cm to the height of the fence to bury it for proper fence support. If your garden has a concrete floor, you just need to make a base for the post so that it has balance.

4. Once all the parts are ready, varnish each one very well, applying at least three coats of varnish so that the wood can withstand the outdoor weather.

5. Using the drill and the screws, attach the latticework to the posts, and that's it!

Take into account the following considerations regarding wood for outdoor use:

1. For outdoor wood, use stain and varnish, especially marine varnish or tinted varnish.

2. All outdoor wood must have at least three coats of coating and should be maintained every two years.

3. If you buy treated wood, you only need to stain or varnish it.

4. If you use untreated wood, treat it with wood preservative and then varnish it, always applying three coats, to prevent moisture and insects from entering.

Make your outdoor spaces an intimate and aesthetic environment with a functional and practical latticework fence. Give that attractive touch to your patio, garden, or terrace.
