A successful barbecue begins with organization, safety, and the right tools. At home, every detail adds up to create a pleasant experience full of flavor.
Safety and preparation
Before lighting, check the stability of the grill and the condition of connections and hoses on gas or infrared models. For charcoal grills, use quality charcoal and follow the lighting instructions.
Protect yourself with an apron and high-performance gloves. If grilling at night, an LED lamp will facilitate visibility and control over cooking.
Essential utensils
A stainless steel set provides durability and hygiene. Include a knife for precise cuts, tongs and a spatula to handle food without losing juices, a serving fork, and a brush for basting meats or vegetables.
Cutting boards help maintain order and cleanliness. A digital thermometer allows you to know the exact temperature to achieve the ideal level of doneness in every preparation.
To expand the menu, incorporate a vegetable basket, chicken roaster, fish basket, and a non-stick mat. If you want to innovate, use a pizza stone or a pizza oven designed for grills, which concentrates heat and delivers crispy, even results.
Efficient and even lighting
A chimney starter facilitates lighting charcoal through natural ventilation. You can also use an electric lighter to have coals ready in a few minutes.

A technique recommended by experts is to place a sheet of aluminum foil over the grate for approximately 10 minutes. This method concentrates the heat and promotes more even lighting. Afterward, you can crumple the aluminum into a ball and use it to remove charcoal residue stuck to the walls.
A good fire should be kept uniform and stable. Intense flare-ups affect cooking and can alter the flavor. If they appear, move the food to a side area of the grill or close the lid to reduce oxygen flow. In more intense cases, adding salt or baking soda helps control the fire.
Keep the charcoal revived throughout the preparation. One load can last between 40 and 60 minutes. If you need more, add it in advance, as it takes 10 to 15 minutes to light properly.
Cleaning and protection
After each use, use a brush with a scraper and an abrasive sponge for grates and griddles. Finish with a cover to protect the grill from dust and moisture, especially given Costa Rica's climate.
With the right accessories and proper techniques, you can perfect every barbecue, experiment with different vegetables and cuts of meat, and turn your home into the ideal setting for sharing memorable moments.
