March 2025.
During the dry season, water rationing is becoming increasingly frequent in different parts of the country.
It is important to take precautions to always have this valuable liquid available at home. Therefore, we bring you some recommendations regarding the types of containers to use and how to clean them.
Choose a suitable container
To store water for consumption, it is recommended to use food-grade liquid storage containers, which prevent toxic substances from being transferred to the stored water.
If the water is to be used for bathing, watering plants, washing the car, or other daily activities, ensure the container you choose meets certain specifications, such as having a lid that closes tightly and being made of a durable material to prevent waste and accidents.
For your health, avoid using containers that have previously been used to store chemical substances (liquid or solid) such as chlorine and pesticides.
Cleaning and disinfection
Before storing water, it is important to clean the containers, whether they are new or reused, to ensure proper water preservation.
Wash the containers with a disinfectant solution and rinse well to remove any residue, then let the container or tank dry completely in the open air.
Once dry, it is ideal to rinse again with clean water; once this step is completed, it will be ready to fill and hold water, even for consumption.
When keeping water stored, it is essential to cover the container, ideally with an airtight lid. This lid will prevent light from reaching the water and stimulating the growth of bacteria and algae.
Appropriate size
There are different sizes of water tanks available. According to World Health Organization data, a 10-minute shower consumes about 200 liters of water, so a family of two should have a tank of at least 450 liters.
For a household of three to four people, it is best to purchase a 750-liter tank, and if the family exceeds 5 people, it is recommended to purchase a tank of at least 1,100 liters.
If necessary, use a hydropneumatic system, which allows you to maintain water pressure throughout the network.
Container maintenance
It is essential to perform periodic maintenance on tanks or containers every 6 months, in addition to following these tips:
- Clean using the previously mentioned steps; it is important to ensure that the containers are free of leaks, cracks, or algae.
- When removing water for consumption, be sure to use a ladle or another completely clean utensil to prevent the water from becoming contaminated.
- Also, avoid touching the inside of the container or the water with your hands.
- Prevent water containers from coming into contact with direct sunlight.
- Place water containers in areas away from where toxic substances, such as gasoline or pesticides, are present.
- Purchase quality water tanks and containers. Choose resistant and durable products that include efficient technology.
By following these recommendations, you can always have water during the dry season without suffering from rationing.
